Teenage girl beats boys and makes history at wrestling tournament to become state champion

A teenage girl beat boys in a wrestling tournament to become the North Carolina state champion.

Girls wrestling is not recognised in the American state and so 16-year-old Heaven Fitch had to enter a male competition to see her dream of becoming champion come true.

She became the first girl to ever win the North Carolina High School Wrestling State Championship.

Since her victory, a video of her has gone viral with 250,000 people watching her ground-breaking win.

She said: "Last year I was the first girl to reach second place in North Carolina, but I never expected to win it. Just to place last year was crazy in itself - all I wanted was to place higher.

"I'm proud of how far I've come," she told the BBC.

Her coach Chris Waddell added: "There hasn't been anyone like her in North Carolina.

"I've never coached anyone like her. Heaven's an exceptional wrestler and she's making history. It's an outstanding achievement - she's just that good.

"All around she's probably the most talented kid I've ever coached. I always tell her she's a unicorn - because she's so special."
