Countdown to McDonald's shutdown sees queues at drive-thrus in search of that last Big Mac

Fast-food diners across the country have been queuing for hours at drive-thrus as McDonald's prepares to close its doors in a bid to prevent the coronavirus spread.

Twitter users shared videos and pictures of enormous traffic jams as Brits try to get their hands on their last Big Mac for the foreseeable future.

McDonald's announced on Sunday that it would be closing its restaurants, including all drive-thru's at 7pm on Monday in order to protect its staff and customers but, following the pattern of last week's announcement of  pubs and clubs  closing, there was a last -minute panic to get one last one in before the doors close.

Other franchises including Subway, Nando's and Costa Coffee are also temporarily closing their doors.

The closure comes on the first day of school closures in the UK, but demands are still being made for the Prime Minister to close further public places after huge influxes of visitors to beaches and parks this weekend, and commuters being forced into cramped carriages on a reduced Underground service.
