The National Women's Hockey League has announced equity funding from insurance and tech entrepreneur Andy Scurto in a move that helps secure the future of the league.

Scurto now joins a group of more than 20 NWHL investors, including co-owner of MLB's Texas Rangers Neil Leibman.

After the NWHL's salary cap was cut from $270,000 to $100,000 in 2016, over 200 professional female players chose to sit out the season in protest.

Speaking on his decision, Scurto said: "The NWHL is a strong league that has implemented a great model for supporting the athletes.

"Having been very involved with youth hockey, as my daughter has played for many years, I see the value sports has to offer and I’m especially passionate about building women’s professional ice hockey for the current and future generations of players."

The capital from his investment will be used to enhance player development as well as increasing infrastructure and ensuring the league has a stable future.
