Fans at this year's Solheim Cup in Gleneagles will have access to free menstrual products for the first time at any major golf competition.

The event sees the top female golfers from Europe and the United States go head to head over three days of golf.

The move to provide free sanitary products will be funded completely by the Scottish government and is in keeping with Scotland's initiative to provide free period products in all Scottish Government buildings and across all local authorities.

The move came about after a campaign from an organisation called "On the ball" and has now encouraged 93 clubs worldwide to provide free period products.

“We hope this move will inspire other sports and competitions to consider making the same simple, forward-thinking change!” said a spokesperson for the organisation.

This is a much welcomed move and the Solheim cup are proud to be at the forefront of such a movement.

The USA are the most recent victors in the Solheim cup, which is a unique biannual event between the two teams.
