23 March 2023

There are fine wines… then there are fun wines, those good-time favourites.

Social sippers, for when you want to sit, drink and chat with friends and don’t want the wine to be the conversation piece – but have the confidence to know it tastes good, and hits the spot.

Here are some tasty, good-value offerings we’ve singled out…

1. Faustino VII Rioja Rosé 2021, Spain, £5.50 from £7, Asda

You have to tip your hat to well-known Spanish producer Faustino – a really delicious rosé is rare at this price, especially while on special. Fabulously fresh and fruity with attractive strawberry and red berry fruits on the nose, it will switch up seafood pastas and paella.

2. Specially Selected Chile Sauvignon Blanc Reserva 2020, Chile, £6.29, Aldi

This ace aromatic white captures New World sauvignon blanc’s classic character with its grassy, herbal aromas, zesty, citrusy fruit flavours, touch of passion fruit, green accents and fresh acidity on the lasting finish. Cheers to Chile!

3. Morrisons The Best Negroamaro 2021, Puglia, Italy, £7, Morrisons

With an IWC (International Wine Challenge) Silver medal under its belt, you know you’re on to a winner. Brimming with sunkissed blackcurrant fruits galore and offering ready-to-drink goodness in a glass, wild berry flavours meld seamlessly with sweet plummy fruits. Your new go-to with tomato-based pasta dishes.

4. Mount Rozier Reserve The Beekeeper Merlot 2021, Stellenbosch, South Africa, £7.25, Co-op, in-store

Who can resist a smooth merlot which factors in satisfaction with every sip? Floral, fruity and full-bodied, this plush, palate-coating red over-delivers for the price and pairs beautifully with Sunday roasts, midweek macaroni cheese and burgers.

5. Torres Sangre de Toro Spanish Red Wine, Catalunya, Spain, £6 from £7.50, Asda

A party food red, aka jammy happy juice with soft spicy notes and velvety smooth mouthfeel, this easy-drinking crowd-pleaser has been appreciated for for more than 60 years. Think beggar’s banquet with patatas a lo pobre – aka poor man’s potatoes. Moreish and delicious.

6. Domaine Paul Mas ‘Côté Mas’ 2021 Languedoc Blanc, Southern France, £8.99, Majestic

Famous Languedoc producer Jean-Claude Mas packs a lot of bright, refreshing fruitiness into this fragrant white. Deftly blended from local varieties, a splash of viognier lends ripe, stone-fruit flavours of peach and apricot with hint of spice on the finish. Perfect with rotisserie style chicken – and lots of banter!
