German tennis star Andrea Petkovic launches online book club to beat the isolation blues

Serbian tennis star Andrea Petkovic has made the most of her time out injured and, now, self-isolating, by creating a book club on social media.

Ten days ago, she created an account on Instagram called 'Racquet Book Club', which has gained over 3,000 followers so far.

The 32 year-old had wanted to start one for years but when the coronavirus outbreak hit, she felt it was the perfect opportunity.

She told Telegraph Sport: "I want to make sure this club is inclusive. When this virus hit, I was like, ‘Okay, if this is not the time, there is never going to be a time."

Serbian-born Petkovic, who has won six WTA titles, revealed that reading books on tour was common.

She added: "I see a lot of people reading in the player lounge. Maria Sharapova is one who always had a book in her hands. Ana Ivanovic [the 2008 French Open champion] was an avid reader.

"It is generationally based, though. If you see the younger generation, they are more digitally aware, and more likely to be looking at a phone. I was born in 1987, so I was from the last generation that grew up in an analogue time."
