Thoughts everyone has during the weird period between Christmas and New Year

29 December 2020

The Christmas break might feel different this year, but one thing remains the same – the quiet period after December 25.

If you’re lucky enough to not have to work between Christmas and New Year, you’ll inevitably be sucked into the black hole of time that is Twixmas It’s a period where there’s nothing to do but catch up on EastEnders and eat mince pies, and can feel both joyous in its lethargy and monotonous.

You could argue this whole year has been a preparation for Twixmas – we’ve largely been staying at home with nothing to do – but that doesn’t stop these thoughts popping into our heads…

What day is it anyway? After counting down the days until Christmas, everything after Boxing Day becomes a bit of a blur. It probably doesn’t help you’ve done nothing other than sit and watch movie marathons in your pyjamas, but the lack of structure means you barely know where you are in the space-time continuum.

Of course chocolate is acceptable for breakfast. It’s Twixmas, which means there are officially no rules – so functioning adults with mortgages and children are absolutely allowed to tuck into a box of Celebrations before 11am.

Should I take the Christmas tree down? The answer to this question is inevitably no, because that would involve getting up from the sofa. This will only get done when January hits and the tinsel starts to look a bit haunting.

I’m so full… For most of us, Christmas and the period that follows is a revolving door of hearty meals, snacks and treats. While we might feel constantly stuffed, that doesn’t stop us from reaching for another mince pie – after all, those leftovers won’t eat themselves…

Should I get dressed today? This is one of the toughest questions you’ll face between Christmas and New Year. Unless you’re changing from one set of pyjamas into another, our answer to this will always be no.

I wonder if there’s anything good in the sales this year. With the post-Christmas sales getting bigger every year, it’s the perfect opportunity to do a spot of online shopping.

I really should thank *insert family member’s name here* for the gift. Every time you walk past the pile of Christmas presents you inevitably haven’t put away yet, you’re reminded you need to send a thank you text to your grandma/uncle/cousin. If only you could find your phone…

When do schools go back? If you’re a parent, you’re an absolute saint if you haven’t secretly longed for this moment at least a few times.

Maybe I should get ahead and do a spring clean… Sure, we all want to start January on the best possible footing, but Twixmas isn’t a time to do anything useful. It’s an opportunity to embrace your inner sloth and relax as much as you can – and after the year we’ve had, we all need it. There will be plenty of time to get stuff done in 2021.
