Transgender weightlifter Laurel Hubbard suffers setback in Olympic bid

Transgender weightlifter Laurel Hubbard has failed to qualify for the Olympics at the Australian Open qualifiers in Canberra.

Hubbard started well as she set a personal best of 133kg in the snatch but failed to register a score in the clean-and-jerk.

She logged weights of 145kg and 146kg but both of her attempts were discounted as she received red flags for her press-outs.

Samoa’s Iuniarra Sipaia was the victor out of six competitors at the Australian competition and booked her spot at the Tokyo this summer.

Last week, Piers Morgan said he was outraged at Hubbard's attempt to compete at Tokyo.

Hubbard will now attempt to get her place at the games in the Oceania Championships in April.
