AFLW season hanging in the balance as pay dispute rages on

The 2020 season of the Australian Women's Football League (AFLW) is hanging in the balance after a pay agreement between players and governing bodies fell through.

The new collective bargaining agreement needed 75% of players on board to be instated but only 70% supported it.

According to reports, the players are demanding a 5% pay increase depending on inflation year-on-year for three seasons.

This is because half of all the players in the AFLW are thought to be earning less than $14,000 last season despite the full-time requirements of the job.

The men's league has a salary cap which says the average player should get paid around $300,000.

The AFLPA said after the agreement was rejected: “Despite the majority of players voting in support of the deal, the AFLPA sought a player support vote of 75% or more to move forward with an approved CBA and, therefore, the deal is not yet approved.

“The AFLPA will now conduct a series of meetings with players to determine the next steps in this process.”

Now that no agreement has been signed the start date of the 2020 cannot be confirmed.
