Anna van der Breggen clinches third Giro Rosa title as Muzic wins final stage

Anna van der Breggen won her third Giro Rosa title after finishing safely in the peloton at the end of the final stage to Motta Montecorvino.

The 30 year-old, who already won the Italian stage race in 2015 and 2017, coasted in alongside her general classification rivals after the breakaway contested the finish.

French rider Evita Muzic won stage nine as she edged out New Zealand’s Niamh Fisher-Black and white jersey wearer Juliette Labous.

But the day belonged to Van der Breggen, who punched the air with aplomb as she crossed the line to signal yet another major career victory.

The 2018 world champion took full advantage of fellow Dutch rider Annemiek van Vleuten abandoning the race after stage seven due to a fractured wrist.

Van Vleuten led the race by nearly two minutes from Poland’s Kataryzna Niewiadoma before crashing on Thursday and subsequently pulling out of the race.

And then on Friday, Van der Breggen and Elisa Longo Borghini went clear of Niewiadoma as the Olympic road race champion moved into the overall lead.

Niewiadoma finished the general classification in second place, one minute and ten seconds down on Van der Breggen.

And Longo Borghini held on to her place on the podium as she finished third ahead of Denmark’s Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig.
