Arsenal sign Matilda star Lydia Williams

Women’s Super League club Arsenal have signed Australian goalkeeper Lydia Williams from Melbourne City FC.

She has played for seven clubs previously including Canberra United FC, Houston Dash and OL Reign.

She also has 88 international caps for the Matildas.

Williams said she is excited to be joining Arsenal: “To be given an opportunity to come over and play with some of the best players in the world is really exciting," she said.

“I remember watching Arsenal as a young kid, so it’s amazing to be a part of this team. I can’t wait to meet all of my teammates.”

And Gunners manager Joe Montemurro added: “This is another really important signing for us.

“With the wealth of experience that Lydia brings, she can help the younger players that we’ve got, but more importantly she’s a big game player that will be solid and really contribute to the group.”

This comes after the Gunners signed fellow Matildas star Steph Catley and Switzerland international Malin Gut last week.

The club already have Aussie Caitlin Foord within their ranks.
