Australian cricketer Emily Smith offered paid internship while serving ban for leaking team line-up

Banned Hobart Hurricanes' wicketkeeper Emily Smith will complete a paid internship with the Australian Cricketers' Association while they decide the next step surrounding her suspension.

Earlier this month the 24-year-old was handed a 12-month ban (9 months suspended) after she posted team information on Instagram before the team had been released.

The association met on Tuesday to discuss her punishment and have offered her a paid internship within the sport so as to keep her close to the game, with roles such as forging links with past players, programme service delivery and event management.

Despite the game being washed out, Smith's post did not adhere to anti-corruption rules which state that players cannot disclose inside information on social media or to journalists.

As a popular option for betting, the Women's Big Bash League take corruption accusations very seriously and the punishment was not contested by Smith, although the players' association may now push for a reconsideration on the "heavy-handed" ban.

The Hobart Hurricanes were also fined AUS$10,000 as Smith should not have had access to her phone at the time of the post.
