Award-winning British DJ Steve Sutherland dies

Award-winning British DJ Steve Sutherland has died, organisers of the MOBO Awards have announced.

Sutherland was a pivotal figure in the development of black music in the UK. The cause of death is not yet known. 

He was named ‘Best Club DJ’ by MOBO in 2000, 2002, 2004 and 2006 and worked as a presenter on Choice FM and Galaxy FM.

MOBO said: “We are deeply saddened to hear the news of DJ Steve Sutherland’s passing. His contribution to the Black British Music scene will never be forgotten. #RIP.”

Sutherland was also well known on the club circuit in both Ibiza and London, with his brand Twice As Nice. 

Fellow DJ and BBC Radio 2 presenter Trevor Nelson and singer Beverley Knight paid tribute on social media. 

Nelson said: “Just heard the sad news of another great loss to British black music. Condolences to the Family of Steve Sutherland who I first met and worked with at the Kensington roof gardens 30 years ago. @TwiceasNiceUK  r.i.p.”

Knight added that she was ‘gutted’ to hear the news. 

CEO of MOBO Kanya King said: “Just heard the awful news of the passing of Steve Sutherland - an incredibly talented ⁦ @MOBOAwards ⁩ winning DJ and all round lovely guy. His achievements inspired so many......RIP- you will remain in our hearts.”

DJ and presenter Angela Douglas added: “One of the legends in bringing underground to the overground.  I shaped my love of music to #SteveSutherland sets in the 90s and his show on #ChoiceFM Condolences to family & friends. RIP Steve.”

Singer Donae’O wrote: “RIP Steve Sutherland. I can’t believe this Crying face this guy was one of the kindest hearted people I know. He was one of the first people to play and support my music when no one else would. This guy is a Legend May his memory be remembered forever.”

BBC Radio 1Xtra presenter Yasmin Evans said: “ I am absolutely heartbroken to hear about the passing of Steve Sutherland. The first memories I have of music & wanting to be a DJ were because of him. I’d sit up close to my radio & record his Galaxy shows constantly. Steve ‘Smooth’ Sutherland, a pioneer!”
