Boston Red Sox pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez out for the season with Covid-related heart illness

Boston Red Sox star Eduardo Rodriguez is out for the rest of the season with a heart illness related to his recent battle with coronavirus.Rodriguez tested positive for Covid-19 in early July, but following recovery from the disease he has been diagnosed with myocarditis - inflammation around the heart.

Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom said: “We are confident that he’s going to make a full recovery and that his longterm prognosis is excellent, but the fact of the matter is there’s just not enough time left this season to safely ramp him back up to pitching."

Rodriguez has said his doctors told him ten to 20 per cent of recovered coronavirus patients are later diagnosed with myocarditis.

“That’s the most important part of your body, so when you hear that, the first time I hear it was kind of scared a little," he said.

“Now that I know what it is, it’s still scary, but I know exactly what it is. Now we just gotta take the rest. That’s hard, but you gotta take a rest.”

The league restarted last month but a series of positive cases has seen 18 fixtures postponed.
