Former world champion boxer Amir Khan is mourning the death of his newborn nephew.

The 33-year-old Bolton-born fighter spoke on social media about the ordeal his family have had to go through.

Speaking on Instagram after the sad news on Wednesday, Khan told his followers: "Tough day for the family.

"My nephew, son of my brother Haroon Khan passed away yesterday. The newborn didn’t make it.

"May Allah make it easy for the family, especially the mother and father, please keep us in your prayers."

Support for Khan poured in on social media as the boxing community stood behind one of Britain’s finest boxers of recent years.

Liverpudlian boxer Anthony Fowler responded to Khan and wished his brother well by saying: "So sorry to hear this news.  @harrykingkhan praying for you mate."

Former ESPN boxing journalist Dan Rafael added: "Condolences to you and your family. #RIP."

And fellow British boxer Ashley Theopane also showed support for Khan’s family by saying: "Condolences to you and your family."
