Boxer Luke Campbell promises kids he will retire after winning world title

Luke Campbell has promised his kids he will retire after achieving his dream as a professional boxer of becoming world champion.

The 32 year-old has lost both his world title challenges so far, against Jorge Linares in 2017 and then Vasyl Lomachenko last August.

And while he admits his family desperately want him to hang up the gloves, he insists he cannot retire before achieving his ultimate goal.

Speaking to The Sun, he said: "Neither of my boys want me to box anymore, they both tell me they want me to quit.

"My eldest even said to me, ‘Dad, did you know a couple of boxers died after fighting last year? I don’t want you to get hurt — I want you to stop now’.

“It was horrible. But I had to explain that I am just not finished with this sport yet. So I  promised him that as soon as I achieve my dream and win that world title, I will quit. I won’t carry on for money or fame, I will get out and be a full-time father.”

Campbell won Olympic gold as an amateur at London 2012 to add to his silver at the world championships the previous year.

He turned professional in 2013 but succumbed to his first defeat against Yvan Mendy in his 13th bout.

The Hull-born southpaw then strung together five wins before being beaten by Linares just two weeks after the sad loss of his father.

But he did not let that deter him as he avenged his loss to Mendy by defeating the Frenchman in September 2018.

He then had a second opportunity to become world champion against pound-for-pound star Lomachenko at The 02 in August 2019, but was beaten by unanimous decision despite a valiant effort.
