British Airways could suspend around 36,000 staff

British Airways is expected to suspend around 36,000 staff as it continues to fight the financial battle against the coronavirus pandemic.

The airline announced earlier this week it was grounding all flights in and out of London's Gatwick Airport as well as London City Airport.

It has been negotiating with the Unite union and reached a broad deal which includes temporarily cutting up to 80 per cent of BA's cabin crew, ground staff, engineers and office workers.

The staff affected by this are expected to receive 80 per cent of their income through the Government's Covid-19 job retention scheme.

BA pilots have already come to an agreement to take a 50 per cent pay cut.

A limited schedule will still continue from Heathrow Airport.
