British stars set to impress at World Para Swimming Allianz Championships in London

The World Para Swimming Allianz Championships will see an elite squad of 24 British para athletes take centre stage at the London Aquatics Centre.

This coming week's event provides an opportunity for athletes to achieve qualification for the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo.

Among the British athletes selected, 15 are set to make their debut at the global event and 11 are already paralympic medalists.

Athletes who finish in the top two of any individual race will receive automatic qualification to Tokyo.

Head coach of British Swimming Rob Aubry said: “We have selected a team that will not just make finals, but challenge for medals in front of a home crowd.

“I’m excited about the prospect of this team and future development of these individuals, as we continue to push these combinations forwards at a global level.”

A record breaking 650 athletes from around the world are set to compete in the Para Championships with a total of 162 races being contested.

Five-time paralympic champion Ellie Simmonds said: “Competing on home soil in London 2012 is something I’ll never forget.

“To get the chance to do it all over again is pretty special. We don’t get many opportunities to compete on a global stage against the world’s best para swimmers.”
