Callum Smith set to secure Canelo Alvarez fight as Mexican eyes Gennady Golovkin bout for May 2021

Britain’s Callum Smith is set to land a career-biggest fight against Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez in September.

The WBA super-middleweight champion from Liverpool, who seemed to have missed out on facing pound-for-pound star Canelo back in May when Billy Joe Saunders looked to have clinched a deal, has now been given a second chance.

Fellow Brit Saunders was expected to meet Canelo in the ring before the coronavirus pandemic threw those plans out the window.

And when Saunders then ruled himself out of a re-scheduled date in September as he didn’t feel he would be ready, it has left Canelo’s team searching for a new opponent.

According to The Athletic, Smith is now the frontrunner to take on the Mexican, who has not been beaten in 12 fights since losing to Floyd Mayweather in 2013.

Meanwhile, Smith holds a perfect record of 27 wins from 27 fights since turning professional in 2012.

There is also a bit of history between the two as Canelo knocked out Callum’s brother Liam Smith back in 2016 when campaigning as a super-welterweight.

It is also being reported that Canelo has lined up a Gennady Golvkin trilogy bout up for May 2021 providing he comes through Smith in September.

Canelo and Golovkin fought to a controversial draw in 2017 in a clash many believed the Kazakh man to have won.

They then rematched 12 months later, with Alvarez winning by majority decision.
