Wimbledon was due to begin today but the coronavirus pandemic means no tennis, no crowds and none of the usual trappings associated with this fortnight in SW19

However, classic matches and moments are being shown on the Wimbledon website so fans can still get their fix.

They launch their replays today and Wimbledon released a video narrated by the Duchess of Cambridge, patron of the All England Tennis Club, to commemorate it.

She said: “350 days, 14 hours and 12 minutes between the last ball hit and when the next was meant to be.

“Over the years, your support has shaped this historic event. No matter the time of day, nor the names on the scoreboard, you have always been there come rain or shine. 

“This year, sadly though, things are very different, but we will bide our time until we sit on the edge of seats again, and celebrate again.

“So when the time is right and we open the gates, we will be back again and it will have been worth the wait.”

The coverage kicks off today with 2019’s first round clash between Venus Williams and Coco Gauff, 2010’s match between Novak Djokovic and Olivier Rochus and 1996’s battle between Tim Henman and Yevgeny Kafelnikov.

They are all available to watch at any time on their website.

And while Wimbledon are showing classic matches, the BBC have also got a bundle of tennis content to replace their coverage of the event.

It begins today on BBC Two with Clare Balding for a three-hour programme called Wimbledon Rewind which revisits classic finals of the tournament.

Then the channel’s coverage will continue in the evenings with Wimbledon: The Best of the Championships presented by Sue Barker.

She will be joined by Boris Becker and Tim Henman where they look back at highlights of the event.

And John McEnroe and Martina Navratilova will join the studio via video link and current players will be speaking about how they have adapted during lockdown.

The BBC will also be airing a documentary about Andy Murray’s career this weekend.
