Commonwealth Games 2022 chief executive Ian Reid confident Tokyo 2020 can be rescheduled

Commonwealth Games 2022 chief executive Ian Reid is confident that the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games can be rescheduled despite coronavirus fears.

He believes that the event could be rearranged if stakeholders work together to find a solution.

Reid told PA news agency: "We feel for our colleagues in Tokyo, who face challenges with everything from the athletes' village availability, sponsors, broadcasting schedules, to the issue of athletes scheduled to compete in other events.

"Of course it's hugely difficult, which I think is why the International Olympic Committee and Tokyo 2020 will do everything they can to make sure that those Games go ahead.

"It's not in anybody's interest to move those dates, but clearly people's health is much more important than sports."

Six Nations fixtures cancelled

UK Ministers set to gather for emergency 'Cobra' meeting

The government announced on Saturday that a meeting had been called for today to discuss the ways to tackle coronavirus.

The meeting has been called following the measures taken by Italian authorities who announced this week that all sporting events in Italy will take place without spectators until at least April 4.
