Doctor Who actor Maurice Roëves dies at 83

Doctor Who and The Last of the Mohicans actor Maurice Roëves has died at the age of 83.

His agents, Lovett Logan Associates paid tribute to their ‘wonderful’ client on social media.

They wrote: “It is with great sadness that we can confirm the passing of our wonderful client #MauriceRoëves. We will miss him hugely & all our love goes to Vanessa [Rawlings-Jackson, his wife] and family.”

His wife Vanessa told the BBC the actor had been in ill health for some time.

Roëves played Stotz in The Caves of Androzani episodes of Doctor Who. He also starred in a whole host of popular 70s TV shows such as Star Trek: The Next Generation, The Sweeney and Days of Our Lives.

He also played David Duckenfield in a 1996 TV film about the Hillsborough disaster.

Roëves also had a successfulmovie career, with The Eagle Has Landed, The Acid House, The Last of the Mohicans, Beautiful Creatures and Judge Dread among his credits. 

His most recent role was on BBC drama The Nest.

Tributes have begun to pour in on social media. Doctor Who’s official page wrote: “We're sad to report the death of Maurice Roeves, who had a long career in TV and film, including playing Stotz in 'The Caves of Androzani'”

While actor Ian Whyte said: "Deeply saddening news of the passing of Maurice Roeves. I met him at the launch of Harrigan in 2013. 

“He was thoroughly, charming, engaging and a wonderful raconteur. Fond memories of wine and talking at length about Last of the Mohicans. Rest in Peace.”

And actor Scot Williams added: "RIP Maurice Roeves. A stunning actor and former colleague who took on the incredibly challenging role of David Duckenfield in Jimmy McGoverns Hillsborough. 

“We thank him for his work on this project and his lengthy filmography.”
