European tours announce first men's and women's mixed golf tournament

The European Tour and Ladies European Tour have announced a mixed tournament as part of their schedules from next year.

78 male and 78 female golfers will compete on the same course for one trophy and a total prize fund of £1.3 million. There are also world ranking, Ryder Cup, Race to Dubai and women's Order of Merit points on offer.

The Scandinavian Mixed will be held at Bro Holf Slott Golf Club in Stockholm, Sweden next June and will be hosted by major champions Annika Sorenstam and Henrik Stenson, Sweden's most successful female and male golfers.

2016 Open Champion Stenson will play in the event, while 2017 Solheim cup captain Sorenstam, who retired from competition in 2008, is due to play in the pro-ams.

It's a huge step for the sport and what acting chief officer for the LET, Alexandra Armas described as "a pivotal moment for European golf".

She said: "This new tournament in Sweden will be an innovative and inclusive new offering which will elevate our sport to the next level and advance gender balance, ultimately showing that golf is a game for all."

The event has so far been confirmed for the next three years and will be held at different venues each year.
