The Merseyside derby between Everton and Liverpool will be held at Goodison Park as planned despite organisers initially hinting it could be moved to a neutral venue.

Southampton’s St Mary’s stadium was being considered as the most viable option to hold the match if the game had to be moved, according to The Athletic.

But it has now been confirmed that The Toffees will be able to host the match which could see Liverpool secure their first title in 30 years.

A club statement from Everton read: "The decision to play the game at the club’s home stadium was made today by the local Ground Safety Advisory Group following positive discussions between the club, Liverpool City Council, Merseyside Police, The Everton Fans’ Forum, The Blue Union, Liverpool Football Club and Spirit of Shankly.

"It means Everton will play all five of their remaining home fixtures for the 2019/20 season behind closed doors at Goodison, with the derby followed by games against Leicester City on Wednesday 1 July (6pm kick-off), Southampton, Aston Villa and Bournemouth.

“Dates and kick-off times for the final three home matches will be confirmed in due course."

Jurgen Klopp’s side currently hold a 25 point lead over Man City as they look to secure their first top flight title in 30 years.

And they could clinch the crown with a victory over their city rivals if Pep Guardiola’s Man City are beaten at home to Arsenal on Wednesday, June 17.
