Sunak: G7 working for ‘green and global’ economic recovery post-Covid

28 May 2021

Rishi Sunak said he has pushed G7 counterparts to ensure efforts to tackle climate change are prioritised as economies rebuild after the pandemic.

In a virtual meeting ahead of a summit of the G7’s finance ministers in London next week, Mr Sunak said they discussed how to move ahead with an “ambitious climate agenda”.

The Chancellor and Bank of England governor Andrew Bailey co-hosted the meeting, with Mr Sunak calling for collective action from the group of seven leading industrialised nations to ensure a “green” recovery.

“It was great speaking to my G7 counterparts today about the actions we need to take to progress our ambitious climate agenda,” Mr Sunak said.

“I look forward to next week’s meeting as we continue working together to support jobs and secure a green and global economic recovery.”

The meetings of ministers and central bank governors come ahead of next month’s summit of G7 leaders in Cornwall.

US President Joe Biden is pushing for agreement on a minimum corporation tax to address how multinationals are taxed, with a proposed rate of 15%.

But international tax issues were not thought to have been on the agenda at Friday’s virtual meeting.
