Former England footballer Eniola Aluko has appeared in a Barbadian court after breaking quarantine rules while on holiday.

Aluko travelled outside of her hotel before receiving results of a coronavirus test, in breach of fules for visitors from at risk countries which include the UK.

She initially pleaded not guilty, saying she was confused by the rules and wasn’t aware she had to remain in her hotel.

“I came here on the basis that there were more relaxed rules. I love Barbados,” the country’s Nation News reported from court.

"I came here in 2015. I came here for vacation. I would never, ever try to break any rules. I understand that I should have waited on the test. I didn’t think I had to, I thought I had to wait a maximum of time. 

"Marriott’s said there was a delay to the results and then they let me go. Honestly, your worship, if they had stopped me from leaving I would have complied."

She then changed her plea to guilty and the magistrate, Douglas Frederick, accepted her version of events and did not fine her. 

However, Aluko said she wanted to pay it anyway as she ‘felt really bad’.

Barbados has so far had 138 cases of the coronavirus with seven deaths.

Aluko is now retired from the game and is a sporting director for Aston Villa Women, as well as a pundit for the BBC and Amazon Prime.

During her time in an England shirt she scored 33 goals in 102 appearances.
