Former Spurs keeper Chloe Morgan was shocked at reaction Renee Hector received after suffering racist abuse

Former Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Chloe Morgan has said she was ’shocked’ at the reaction team-mate Renee Hector received after she suffered racist abuse on the pitch.

Hector claimed Sheffield United’s Sophie Jones made monkey noises at her during a Championship match in 2019. It was later found by a Football Association regulatory commission that Jones had racially abused Hector.

Morgan, who was on the pitch at the time, told The Telegraph she was ’shocked’ about how much abuse on social media Hector received following the verdict of the commission.

She said: “Quite naively, I thought that Renee would speak up about the experience and everyone would be on board and share the same views as us: that racism is abhorrent, disgusting and completely wrong.

“But to then be confronted by a large number of comments saying completely the opposite was shocking. As a black player, it definitely made me feel uncomfortable that there was still such a large facet of society that shared those views.”

Morgan has just left Spurs after her contract expired and it has not been confirmed where she will play next season.

Recently she has attended events in London, supporting the Black Lives Matter movement. And it has made her think about the representation of  the BAME community in sport.

She said: “More BAME coaches would be a fantastic thing. Definitely, having those role models as coaches, PE teachers, is a very impactful way of encouraging younger kids to see themselves in those roles one day."
