Gen. G teams up with Bumble to boost female participation in Esports

Dating app, Bumble, has partnered Esports gaming company Gen. G to help develop a female community for gamers, influencers and fans.

Esports is the only sport that provides a level playing field for men, women and people who identify as neither yet not a single woman competed in the main event at last month's inaugural Epic Games' World Cup finals for Fortnite.

Bumble is a unique dating app in that once a match is made, there is a 24 hour window in which the female can message (or not) before the match disappears. They also run Bumble BFF which is a platform on which women can match other women to make new friends.

This is where the partnership with Gen. G was launched; Bumble has added a 'gaming' badge to it's BFF profiles so gamers can find matches in their area.

Gen. G CEO Chris Park understands that there is a huge imbalance saying to Forbes "The gaming communities have long been oriented around men and been somewhat toxic for women participating and even watching."

He continued saying: "We want to change that and give voice to and promote how women bring gaming into their lives and friendships."

"We want to empower women to be part of this sport." he finished.

Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games, estimates that over a third of the 250million Fortnite players worldwide are female and this is something he wants to translate into competition numbers.

Bumble has also formed a partnership with Gen. G's new head of gaming initiatives, Kristen Valnicek, known online as KittyPlays. She has over a million followers on gaming platform, Twitch, so she will be a great role model for female gamers worldwide.

“My personal role for the Bumble partnership is going to be facilitating content creation about myself, the #TeamKitty girls and the Gen.G professional players,” she says . “But my main focus will be on Bumble BFF and bringing gamers together.

Kristen will be forming the first all female Fortnite team alongside MaddieSuun, Hannah, TinaRaes and Icarlee.

This is a huge step for women in Esports and reflects the phenomenal transition that is happening throughout all sports. This initiative is benefitting women and girls worldwide and encouraging them to be confident in a male dominated industry.
