Gossip Girl fans left ‘disappointed’ as Ed Westwick countdown tease is not what they had hoped for

Gossip Girl heartthrob Ed Westwick has left fans frustrated after a social media tease led them to think he was sharing news of their favourite show but instead led to the launch of Chuck Bass face masks.

The 32 year-old, who plays the infamous Bass in the US show, posted a countdown clock across a photo of its iconic ‘XOXO’ caption on Sunday night.

Fans leapt to the conclusion that he would be sharing an update on the long-awaited reboot of the New York-based teen drama.

However, once the clock hit zero, their hopes were dashed as there was no update from the English actor.

His name began trending on Twitter as they continued to speculate until their dreams were finally shattered as they realised it was a promotion for new Gossip Girl branded Covid-19 face masks.

One wrote: “Ed Westwick really made us all think a Gossip Girl reunion was happening but instead was an announcement for these masks I’m so done,” while another added: “You mean to tell me I thought Gossip Girl was coming back? Only for Ed Westwick to start selling masks with XOXO writing, men men men...”

A proportion of the profits from the masks, which retail at £14.49 ($18.14), will go to the Kick It Out charity which focuses on stamping out racism in football.

While Westwick may not have revealed any further details of the show’s reboot, it is currently known that it will take place eight years after the original series and is set to premiere on HBO Max in 2021.
