Houston Dash put two past OL Reign to claim victory in the NWSL Challenge Cup

Houston Dash outclassed OL Reign to claim a 2-0 victory in the National Women’s Soccer League Challenge Cup last night.

The win is Dash’s first in the competition and has put them in second position in the table. They have four points, the same as Utah Royals, but are ahead on goal difference.

Dash looked dangerous from kick off and did not take long to score.

In the 12th minute Shea Groom hit a perfect layoff pass to Kirstie Mewis who smashed the ball to the right hand corner of the goal.

Reign’s keeper Casey Murphy couldn’t get a hand to it and so Dash were 1-0 up.

More promising play came from Dash in the first half but no more chances were converted and so the teams headed into the break a goal apart.

The second half didn’t see much improvement from Reign. Throughout the match they had seven attempts at goal, none of which were on target.

By contrast, Dash showed more flare and it wasn’t long before they found themselves on the score sheet again.

Woman of the match Groom found herself on the end of a Rachel Daly cross and she headed the ball home in the 54th minute.

Dash were able to keep their 2-0 lead and as the final whistle blew they celebrated their first win of the tournament.

Both teams will be back in action on Wednesday. Dash will play Sky Blue FC and Reign will face Utah Royals.
