Jockey Hayley Turner returns to Royal Ascot, scene of her moment in history

Jockey Hayley Turner returns to Ascot this week, hoping history will repeat itself.

Turner, 37, won the Sandringham Stakes in 2019 aboard Thanks Be and became the first woman in 32 years to win a race at the royal meeting.

She told The Telegraph: “I think it’s nice that the girls can see it’s achievable, and it gives them some drive, so yeah, being a girl in a man’s world has never been an issue for me because everyone’s been pretty fair.

“The lads I’ve worked with have never looked at me any differently. When I was starting [in 2000] Michael Bell [the trainer] pushed for me to put me where I am now, and that was not fashionable at the time.

"Now it’s fashionable, so that makes it easier. And just the training and the fitness, the racing schools. Nutrition as well. Times have changed massively on that front.”

She will be competing again this year in the same race, this time aboard Onassis for trainer Charlie Fellows.
