LPGA cancels CP Women’s Open due to Covid-19

The LPGA have cancelled the CP Women’s Open for the first time since it was founded in 1973 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The event was scheduled to be played in September at the Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club in Vancouver and will now take place in a year’s time instead.

In a statement the LPGA said: "Golf Canada and CP have continued to monitor guidelines set by federal, provincial and municipal authorities intended to prevent the community spread of the virus.

“Physical factors including restrictions on international travel and mandatory quarantine along with limitations on group gatherings in the province of British Columbia ultimately forced the event’s postponement at Shaughnessy until 2021.”

The LPGA Tour was put on hold in April but is set to return for the first time since the pandemic, with a new 54-hole event called the LPGA Drive On Championship in late July in Ohio.

The event will be followed by the postponed Marathon LPGA Classic which begins on August 6.
