Man City’s Georgia Stanway says WSL cancellation was a ‘tough one to take’ for the club

Manchester City forward Georgia Stanway has said the cancellation of the Women’s Super League season was a ‘tough one to take’ for the club.

Before the league was suspended City were at the top of the table. However, the Football Association used a points per game system to calculate the final placings which meant Chelsea leap-frogged Stanway’s club to claim the WSL title.

She told BBC Sport: "Obviously it's out of our control so we just had to take it on the chin and move on.

"Nobody likes it to go down to that kind of circumstance but it was out of our control. For the games that we played, we obviously tried to get as many points as we could and that didn't work in our favour."

Many have criticised the FA for cancelling the WSL as the Premier League has resumed and will finish its season.

However, Stanway has said she respects their decision.

"I see football as football and not as men's and women's so it would have been nice to carry on.

"There's such a contrast within our league, so having spoken with all the teams, they [the FA] took that measure upon themselves to cancel the season and make it equal throughout and we respect that decision."
