Manchester City midfielder Caroline Weir has said she supports the FA’s idea to pilot crowds at women’s football matches in the upcoming season.

The FA are looking to get the go-ahead from the Department for Digital Culture, Media and Sport to begin to reintroduce crowds to the women’s game both in the Women’s Super League and the Championship.

“It’s an interesting idea. Obviously, we’re not filling 60,000-seater stadiums like in the men’s game, our stadiums are smaller and if it puts women’s football at the forefront and gets people talking about coming to see matches - and it’s one of the first sports to let people back in - that’s a positive thing," she told The Telegraph.

“If it’s safe and appropriate, players will be happy with that and it would be good for getting women’s football back out there.”

Other sports have attempted to get crowds back into venues, namely snooker, but pilot crowds were cancelled until August 15 due to a recent spike in Covid-19 cases in the UK.

The opportunity for crowds in the upcoming women’s season, which begins on September 5, is yet to be confirmed. 

What fans do know is the opening fixtures, with Weir’s City facing newly-promoted Aston Villa in their first game.

She added: “The first game of the season is always tough no matter who you play. We won’t be taking anything for granted and we’ll need to be at our best to get a result, but it will definitely be a day to look forward to.”
