Megan Rapinoe will NOT take part in the NWSL Challenge Cup, coach confirms

OL Reign star Megan Rapinoe has opted out of playing in the National Women’s Soccer League’s Challenge Cup, her club coach has confirmed.

Rapinoe won’t be taking part due to concerns about the spread of coronavirus and increased injury risk.

Reign coach Farid Benstiti told French outlet Le Progres: "It's a shame. I understand her motivations but I'm disappointed and frustrated that she's not with us to compete in this tournament.

"Megan is important to the group and we could have achieved something important with the club, if she had joined the rest of the group. She will be greatly missed by the team and also women's football."

The NWSL are aiming to be the first league to return in North America on June 27 and will complete their entire season in one month. 25 games are scheduled to take place over 30 days in Utah.

When the tournament was announced it was confirmed players could choose whether or not they wanted to play.

If they do opt out the athletes will still be paid for the season and will have full medical and housing benefits.

The nine-club competition announced their preliminary schedule this week and have set July 26 as the date for the final.
