Messages pour in for Boris Johnson as Britain holds its breath following PM's hospitalisation

US President Donald Trump was among several high-profile figures to wish Prime Minister Boris Johnson a full recovery following his hospitalisation on Sunday evening.

The 55 year-old was admitted to a London hospital late on Sunday night after showing persistent symptoms of coronavirus.

And the news was met with messages of support from around the world.

At the beginning of his Sunday press conference, President Trump said: "Before I begin I want to express our nation’s well wishes to Prime Minister Boris Johnson as he wages his own personal fight with the virus.

"All Americans are praying for him. He’s a friend of mine. He’s a great gentleman and a great leader and he’s, as you know, he was brought to the hospital today, but I’m hopeful and sure that he’s going to be fine."

The new leader of the Labour Party Sir Keir Starmer also offered his best wishes, saying: "Wishing the Prime Minister well and a speedy recovery."

Meanwhile, former England striker Gary Lineker said on Twitter: "The Prime Minister has been admitted to hospital. This thing does not discriminate. Wish him well."

Good Morning Britain host Piers Morgan said: "If you’re not rooting for our Prime Minister tonight & willing him to make a speedy recovery, then you’re a despicable human being.

"He is very ill with a deadly virus & his pregnant partner has also been sick. Incredibly worrying time for them & the country. Come on Boris."
