Microsoft in talks to buy Tik Tok despite Donald Trump’s calls for app to be banned

Microsoft have revealed they are in talks to acquire Tik Tok following President Trump’s threat to ban the social media app in the United States

More than 80 million Americans currently use the short-clip video platform.

But Trump told reporters on Air Force One last week that he was seeking to ban the Chinese video-sharing app.

He said: "As far as TikTok is concerned, we’re banning them from the United States.

And he then added: "Well, I have that authority. I can do it with an executive order or that."

But the comments by the US president have not stopped Microsoft pursuing a deal to secure the app.

"Microsoft fully appreciates the importance of addressing the President’s concerns," a statement from Microsoft said, reports Reuters.

"It is committed to acquiring TikTok subject to a complete security review and providing proper economic benefits to the United States, including the United States Treasury."

The statement came following a conversation between Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and President Trump.

Microsoft are hoping to reach an agreement with Chinese internet company ByteDance, the current owners of Tik Tok by September 15.
