North Carolina Courage dominate Washington Spirit in a 2-0 win in the NWSL Challenge Cup

Lynn Williams dominated the match as she scored both goals for North Carolina Courage in their National Women’s Soccer League Challenge Cup match against Washington Spirit.

The masterclass moved Courage into first place in the competition with Spirit hot on their heels in second place.

Both teams headed into the match already with a win under their belts and both targeting top spot.

The first half saw some good chances at goal but both sides failed to convert some promising play.

Spirits’ best chance in the first half came in the third minute as Andi Sullivan looked to score a screamer from outside of the box. Courage’s keeper Steph Labbe made a phenomenal save as she dived to block the ball.

And US national star and Spirit forward Rose Lavelle also had a chance in the eighth to put her team ahead but couldn’t quite convert.

Going into half-time the two teams were in a 0-0 deadlock and as the second half began Williams turned up the heat.

In the 50th minute she scored a spectacular solo goal. She intercepted a ball from Spirits’ Sam Staab and dribbled her way to a position so she could cross it in.

However, no defender stopped her so she continued toward goal and finished off her solo effort.

11 minutes later Williams scored again, this time after a cross from Debinha.

Courage had a few more chances to make it 3-0 but at the full-time whistle they had to settle for a 2-0 victory.

Williams’ goals puts her in the lead for the tournament’s Golden Boot as she now has three to her name. Houston Dash’s Rachel Daly is just behind her on two.

Both teams will be back in action on July 5 as Courage take on Chicago Red Stars and Spirit are against Portland Thorns.
