NWSL player Joanna Boyles announces retirement due to injury

National Women's Soccer League player Joanna Boyles has been forced to retire due to a back injury.

The Orlando Pride midfielder made 19 appearances and scored one goal in her only season with the club. She previously played for the Chicago Red Stars Reserves and moved to Pride in 2019 to play in the NWSL.

She also was selected for the US U17 squad in 2012.

The 24-year-old took to Instagram to announce her retirement, saying: "Those who know me, know how much I love the game of soccer, which makes this the hardest decision I’ve ever had to make.

"After an unexpected back injury, I’ve decided to step away from the game I love so much. I want to have a healthy, happy, and pain free future and stepping away now helps to guarantee that.

"After overcoming injuries in the past, my body just can’t do it anymore. The past 21 years, soccer has provided me with best friends, taken me across the world, and helped shape me into the person I am today. I’d like to thank my family, friends, teammates, and coaches who have all been with me on this roller coaster of a journey.

"I’m excited to see what the future holds as this chapter of my career closes so suddenly. Soccer will always be a huge part of my life and I will be forever grateful for what it has taught me. I promise I will pay it forward."

Orlando Pride's head coach Marc Skinner said: “We are devastated for Jo but thankful that she was able to catch this injury now and we 100% support her decision to put her health first.

“Jo embodied the passion and dedication of the Pride crest and we are thankful we were able to work with her, even if it was for just a season. We wish Jo the best of luck and she will always be a part of our Pride family.”
