OL Reign and Sky Blue play out frustrating goalless draw to round off first set of NWSL Challenge Cup matches

OL Reign and Sky Blue capped off the first round of NWSL Challenge Cup fixtures with the tournament’s first goalless draw.

Sky Blue forward Ifeoma Onumonu had the first real chance of the game five minutes before the break when she burst through but could only blaze her shot over the bar.

And the New Jersey-based side came even closer moments later when Nahomi Kawasumi was played in but had her shot blocked at close range.

Darian Jenkins had a great chance for Reign just before hour mark when she was gifted a free header at the back post, but she steered it tamely wide of the goal.

And it was Jenkins again who caused trouble in the Sky Blue back line when she ran at them with just 10 minutes remaining, only for her deflected shot to be clutched by the dive of Kailen Sheridan.

But perhaps the best opportunity of the match fell to Reign substitute Jasmyne Spencer with just five minutes left as she used her lightning speed to accelerate away from the defenders, but was thwarted by a strong hand from Sheridan.

The result follows a sensational 3-3 draw between Houston Dash and Utah Royals earlier on in the day.
