Sir Chris Hoy has said it would be a 'great feat' to get more women cycling as part of British Cycling's campaign 'One in a Million'. 

The national governing body promoted the initiative on the fourth day of the Six Day series in London, with the goal to get one million more women on bikes by 2020.

The campaign specifically wants to tackle perceptions that stop women from taking up cycling and six-time Olympic gold medalist Hoy is fully behind it.

He said: "Getting a million more women in the saddle will be a great feat.

"If we are to close the cycling gender gap we need to show women that it is safe, you don't have to be super fit or have a wardrobe full of lycra."

British Cycling are urging more women to get out on their bikes after a 2018 study showed two thirds of British cyclists are men, compared to countries such as Denmark where women are the more active gender in the sport.

The initiative's promotional video features many women and girls who love cycling or who may be taking it up for the first time.

The Six Day cycling event concludes at the Lee Valley VeloPark in Stratford on Sunday.
