Portland Thorns fail to convert chances in goalless draw with Chicago Red Stars in NWSL Challenge Cup

Portland Thorns had multiple chances to score against Chicago Red Stars but they could not convert promising play so their match ended in a goalless draw in the National Women’s Soccer League’s Challenge Cup.

Both teams were seeking their first win of the tournament but had to settle for the draw.

Thorns started the game strongly, displaying dangerous attacking play and  had several shots at goal.

Their best chance to score in the first half came from Morgan Weaver, who struck the ball following a great cross by Celeste Boureille.

However, Red Stars keeper Emily Boyd made a phenomenal save by punching the ball away to keep Thorns at bay.

Heading into half-time the match remained in a 0-0 deadlock.

The second half saw some drama as Makenzy Doniak was handed a yellow card for a challenge on Thorn’s Lindsay Horan.

And the Red Stars did create some chances.

They nearly scored in the 39th minute as Savannah McCaskill stuck one home but the ball just went over the bar.

Another yellow card was handed out in the 79th minute, this time to Thorns’ Tyler Lussi for handball. A free kick was awarded but Red Stars couldn’t get the goal.

It looked as though Thorns were going to inflict late heartbreak on the Red Stars in the 89th minute as Emily Ogle took a chance at goal but she narrowly missed the opportunity to snatch the win.

The two clubs will look to seal their first wins of the tournament in their next matches.

Thorns will next play Washington Spirit on July 5 and Red Stars will take the field again against North Carolina Courage on the same day.
