Reddit and Twitch ban pro-Donald Trump accounts in attempt to combat hate speech

Social media sites Reddit and Twitch have joined some of their competitors in suspending or banning content related to US President Donald Trump in an attempt to combat hate speech.

Twitch suspended Trump’s own account on Monday as it breached their ‘hateful conduct’ policy.

In a statement the company said: “Hateful conduct is not allowed on Twitch. In line with our policies, President Trump’s channel has been issued a temporary suspension from Twitch for comments made on stream, and the offending content has been removed …

"Like anyone else, politicians on Twitch must adhere to our Terms of Service and Community Guidelines. We do not make exceptions for political or newsworthy content, and will take action on content reported to us that violates our rules.”

The particular content it cited for the suspension was re-broadcasting parts of Trump’s 2016 campaign for president. In the clips he claimed Mexicans were ‘rapists’ and ‘criminals’.

Reddit has banned a pro-Trump message board, known as a subreddit, as it ‘consistently hosted and upvoted more rule-breaking content than average’.

The subreddit also did not comply when the company attempted to get them to follow their policy.

Reddit’s CEO Steve Huffman said: “To be clear, views across the political spectrum are allowed on Reddit – but all communities must work within our policies and do so in good faith, without exception."

They are the latest companies to take action against Trump accounts which adds pressure on Facebook to do the same.

Twitter took action in May when they added a fact check note to the bottom of one of Trump’s own tweets and hid another which threatened violence against protesters.

While Snap on June 3 said they would stop Trump posts being published on their discover page as they said they would not ‘amplify voices who incite racial violence and injustice’.

Facebook have not followed suit and have endured an advertising boycott from brands such as Coca Cola for not taking down Trump’s post which said 'when the looting starts the shooting starts’.
