Romanian fruit pickers to be flown into UK to fill farm labourer vacancies

Romanian fruit pickers are set to be flown into Stansted Airport tomorrow to help fill farm labourer vacancies.

The first flight will bring 180 farmworkers from Bucharest, with up to six other flights set to operate over the next few months, according to The Times.

The workers will then be transported by bus to sites across the southeast and Lincolnshire.

British farmers have been forced to ask for extra help as the coronavirus restrictions have led to a shortage of labour. And although many who have become unemployed, have applied for farming jobs, not enough have been filled.

British company Air Charter Service confirmed it had organised the initial flight.

The workers who will be on board have been told to maintain social distancing and would not be allowed to leave their country if they displayed symptoms of Covid-19.
