Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez’s promoter reveals ‘very good chance’ his next fight will be against British boxer

There is a ‘very good chance’ Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez could face a Brit in his next fight, according to the Mexican’s promoter.

The 29 year-old was originally set to take on Englishman Billy Joe Saunders in May before the coronavirus pandemic called off the fight.

And Saunders has now ruled himself out of taking on Canelo in September as he insists he will not be ready.

But there are still British fighters such as Callum Smith and John Ryder who are in the frame to get the fight and Golden Boy Promotions’ president Eric Gomez believes those match-ups could well take place.

Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: "There is a very good chance (he could fight a Brit). There are a couple of guys we are looking at as a possibility."

Canelo has won 53, drawn two and lost just one of his 56 professional fights, with his only defeat coming against Floyd Mayweather Jr back in 2013.

Last time out he moved up to 175 pounds and knocked out light-heavyweight Sergey Kovalev in the 11th round.

Meanwhile, Smith beat Ryder by unanimous decision in Liverpool last November, although many felt the scorecards were controversial in what was a close fight.

Yet while both Brits are in with a chance of getting the Canelo bout, Gomez was quick to remind people that, given the current circumstances, taking on an American would be a lot easier logistically.

"We don't have to deal with any visa restrictions that have been imposed by the government. If there is someone already here in the US? That helps," he added.

"It is more difficult now because of the restrictions. The borders are not all open so it isn't easy to bring some fighters to the US.

"It all depends on the negotiations. We are not living in the world that we lived in last year. Canelo will be taking a significant pay-cut.

"It depends on the negotiations. Anybody willing to come to the table and be reasonable, he will fight. We are not discarding any of the top guys."

All of Canelo’s last 16 fights have been in the US, with 12 of them landing in Las Vegas.
