World No 1 Ashleigh Barty has confirmed she will compete in the first ever Adelaide International in January.

The 2019 French Open winner will be joined by Wimbledon champion Simona Halep and seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams.

And the American, who has not won a WTA event since 2016, told fans she was eager to be a part of the new tournament.

She said: “It is always exciting to play at a new tournament in front of new fans.

“I’ve had so many memorable times in Australia over the years and I am looking forward to discovering Adelaide and all it has to offer.”

Other high-profiler players competing include Kiki Bertens, Petra Kvitova and Johanna Konta.

The event will be the opener to many players' seasons ahead of the Australian Open the following week.
