Sky Blue FC’s Kenie Wright out of NWSL Challenge Cup with torn ACL

National Women’s Soccer League club Sky Blue FC have announced Kenie Wright won’t take part in the rest of the Challenge Cup as she has torn her anterior cruciate ligament.

The midfielder sustained the injury to her right knee at a team training session on Sunday. She is yet to make an appearance in the tournament but has been on the bench in the side’s two matches so far.

She says she will come back stronger from the injury.

“I am heartbroken by the news that I have torn my ACL but I have a great support system in my teammates, friends, family, and the Sky Blue staff.

“I know I will come back stronger and healthier for the 2021 season. I’m wishing the best to the team in the rest of the tournament. I’ll be watching and cheering them on!”

And head coach Freya Coombe added: “The injury to Kenie is really upsetting not just for her, but the whole team. Kenie has been working hard and training well and this is a tough blow for her.

"She is a really positive person and I know she will attack her rehab with the same energy and desire as she attacks training. We look forward to seeing her back on the field next season.”

Wright is not the first player in the American soccer league to sustain the injury recently.

OL Reign’s Kelcie Hedge tore her ACL in a training session and Chicago Red Stars’ Alyssa Mautz ruptured hers just prior to the tournament.
