English snooker player Alfie Burden took a knee before his Championship League match against Ryan Day on Wednesday in a bid to stress that ’there is no place for racism in society’.

People across the world have been dropping to one knee as a show of support for anti-racism campaigning following the death of black American George Floyd in Minneapolis on May 25.

And world No 78 Burden, who was playing at an empty Marshall Arena in Milton Keynes, insisted it was his way of voicing how he feels about the situation.

Speaking about the gesture, Burden said: "It was very important. I stand behind the fight against racism. It's a disgraceful thing, the well-documented death of George Floyd in America.

"It was my platform to say how I felt about things. We are united together. There is no place for racism in society.

"That was my platform. I wanted to make my feelings known today."

Burden went on to lose the match 3-0.
