Soccer star Rapinoe blasts Trump administration over unemployment crisis as her mum is forced to claim benefits

US Soccer star Megan Rapinoe has criticised president Donald Trump's administration over the financial crisis facing the country as she revealed her mother has been forced to claim unemployment benefit for the first time.

Nearly ten million people in America have been put in a similar position over the last two weeks - including Rapinoe's mother Denise, who works as a waitress.

Rapinoe was speaking to congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Instagram live, when she said: "I love what you said the other day on Senate floor, you talked about your mum being an hourly worker.

"My mum is as well, she is a waitress and she was like 'this is crazy I literally had to file for unemployment for the first time in my whole life, what does this mean? What are we doing?'

"That hit me so hard. I think people don't realise how the majority of Americans live paycheck to paycheck."

She continuued: "People are struggling, they're scared, they don't know what to do and they need help. It's become very clear who is important, who's not important, where the money's going, who is getting it first, who is getting it easily and just what this administration is all about."
