As it is St Andrews Day, we are counting down five of the best Scottish sportswomen.

The first two revealed earlier today were Arsenal midfielder Kim Little and Scottish runner Laura Muir, and now we are moving onto someone who wrote herself into the history books earlier this year.

Catriona Matthew

Matthew made her name as a major-winning golfer following her triumph at the 2009 British Open where she won by a superb three shots from Australian Karrie Webb.

But it is her Solheim Cup appearances which she will be go down in history for as one of the true greats of not only Scottish, but world golf.

Matthew is a three-time winner of the Solheim Cup, securing the title with Team Europe in 2003, 2011 and 2013.

And then in September this year, Matthew led Europe in as captain against a USA side who were hotly tipped to comfortably secure victory.

But on a thrilling final day's play at Gleneagles, Suzann Pettersen made a putt on the 18th and final hole to give Europe the win by just a single point.

It was one of the great Solheim Cup performances from a team who many were writing off beforehand, and it means Matthew goes down as a Scottish sporting legend.
